Know Your Marriage License Options
Public vs. Confidential Marriage License in California
You have picked your person. Now it is time to pick your marriage license! California offers both public and confidential marriage licenses.
Both can be used for a legally valid California marriage. The main differences concern eligibility, witness signatures, and access to the marriage record.
Great Officiants issues confidential marriage licenses through our authorized specialized notaries. Here is how the two options compare.

Public Marriage License
A public marriage license is an option for couples who are not living together or who prefer this type of marriage record.
At least one witness must attend your ceremony and sign the license. You may have a second witness sign, but a second signature is not required.
After registration, the marriage record is public. However, an authorized certified copy and an informational certified copy are different documents.
- Authorized certified copies: Available only to people authorized by law.
- Informational certified copies: Available to other requesters and marked as not valid for establishing identity.
This distinction matters. Public access does not mean everyone can obtain an identity-valid authorized copy of your marriage record.
Confidential Marriage License
A confidential marriage license offers restricted access to your marriage record and requires no witness signatures.
To qualify, both applicants must be 18 or older and already living together as spouses. Both must sign an affidavit confirming that fact.
The record is registered with the county, but it is not available for ordinary public inspection. Copies may be requested by the married couple. Other people need a court order.
Private paperwork does not mean a secret wedding. You can still invite guests and celebrate with your favorite people. They simply do not sign as witnesses on a confidential marriage license.
Which Marriage License Is Better for You?
The right choice depends on your eligibility and preferences. A confidential license may be a good fit if you qualify, value restricted access to your marriage record, and prefer not to arrange a witness signature.
A public license is the option to consider if you do not meet the confidential-license requirements. Eligible couples may also choose a public license simply because they prefer it.
We recommend considering a confidential license when you qualify and record privacy is important to you. Confidentiality limits access to the marriage record; it is not a guarantee against identity theft.
Both are marriage licenses, not completed marriages. Obtaining the license is one step. You still need your marriage ceremony and the required completion and return of the paperwork.
Our Specialized Notaries Make It Convenient
Great Officiants has specialized notaries authorized by Los Angeles County to issue confidential marriage licenses to eligible couples.
This is a specific county authorization. Being a notary alone does not authorize someone to issue marriage licenses.
