Wedding Day FAQs
The Big Day Has Arrived. Now What?
IT'S WEDDING DAY! The planning is done, the excitement is building, and you're just moments away from saying "I DO!"
And guess what? Your Great Officiant has got this!
We've been helping couples get married since 2003, and we know how important it is for your Wedding Ceremony to run smoothly, feel natural and create an unforgettable experience for you and your guests.
From arriving early and coordinating with your wedding vendors to handling your Marriage License and delivering an amazing ceremony, we're here to make the magic happen!
Here's what you can expect from your Great Officiant on your wedding day.
⏰ What Time Will Our Great Officiant Arrive?
Our Great Officiants generally arrive between 30 minutes and 1 hour before your scheduled Wedding Ceremony.
This gives us time to check in with your wedding planner or coordinator, confirm the ceremony location, review the final details and make sure everything is ready for your big moment.
We'll also check the microphone and sound system, coordinate with anyone participating in the ceremony and get ourselves ready to ROCK your wedding!
📜 When Do We Sign Our Marriage License?
At Great Officiants, we prefer to take care of the Marriage License paperwork before your Wedding Ceremony begins.
This allows us to verify the information, obtain the necessary signatures and make sure everything is properly prepared.
We don't want you worrying about paperwork when you should be enjoying your wedding celebration!
If you're using a California Public Marriage License, you'll need 1 or 2 witnesses to sign the license.
If you're using a California Confidential Marriage License, no witnesses are required.
Your Great Officiant will complete the necessary Officiant information and arrange for the completed license to be returned for recording after the ceremony has taken place.
🎤 Does Our Great Officiant Bring a Microphone and Sound System?
Your guests want to hear the beautiful promises, funny stories and heartfelt moments of your Wedding Ceremony.
That's why we strongly recommend having a proper microphone and sound system, especially for larger weddings or outdoor ceremonies.
Typically, your DJ, venue or sound provider supplies the microphone and speakers.
Our preferred setup is a handheld microphone.
Please confirm microphone and sound arrangements with your venue or DJ before the wedding.
For small elopements and intimate ceremonies, a microphone may not be necessary.
Some of our Great Officiants also have their own non-professional sound systems available for small weddings and elopements for an additional $75 fee.
These are basic, portable sound systems intended for smaller ceremonies, not professional DJ-quality equipment. Availability varies by Officiant, so please ask us in advance if you'd like to add this option.
If you've booked a Great Officiants wedding setup that includes sound equipment, we'll coordinate the equipment included in your package.
⏳ How Long Does a Wedding Ceremony Usually Last?
Most wedding timelines block off 30 minutes for the entire Wedding Ceremony.
That means from the moment the wedding party starts walking down the aisle until the newlyweds make their grand exit, the entire experience should fit within that 30-minute window.
The actual spoken ceremony is usually shorter, leaving plenty of time for the processional, vows, ring exchange, first kiss and recessional.
During your ceremony design meeting, we'll help plan the flow so everything fits comfortably within your wedding timeline.
And here's a little advice from your friends at Great Officiants: If your ceremony goes much longer than 30 minutes, your friends and family might start hating you! LOL!
Okay, maybe not REALLY hate you, but remember, your guests came to celebrate your love, not sit through a three-hour documentary about your relationship!
🚦 What Happens if Our Wedding Ceremony Starts Late?
We understand that weddings don't always run exactly on schedule.
Hair and makeup can take longer than expected, transportation can be delayed, and sometimes the wedding party just needs a few extra minutes.
If your ceremony is running late, please let your Great Officiant know as soon as possible.
Our Officiants often perform multiple Wedding Ceremonies on the same day, so significant delays may affect other scheduled commitments.
A late fee of $25 for every 15 minutes the ceremony is delayed may be charged at the discretion of your Great Officiant.
We'll do our best to accommodate delays when possible, but our Officiants may have other weddings or commitments scheduled afterward.
🤝 Will Our Great Officiant Work With Our Wedding Planner or Coordinator?
Your Wedding Ceremony works best when everyone is working together.
Your Great Officiant will coordinate with your wedding planner, venue coordinator or designated ceremony contact as needed.
We'll confirm important details such as:
- The ceremony start time
- The processional and entrance order
- Where everyone should stand
- Special readings and ceremony elements
- Microphone and sound arrangements
- Any important last-minute changes
Your planner or coordinator generally manages the overall wedding-day timeline and helps organize the wedding party.
Your Great Officiant focuses on delivering a beautiful, professional Wedding Ceremony.
📸 Will Our Great Officiant Coordinate With Our DJ and Photographer?
Your DJ and photographer play important roles in making your Wedding Ceremony look and sound amazing.
We'll coordinate with your DJ or sound provider to confirm the microphone, ceremony music and important cues.
We'll also communicate with your photographer about special moments such as the ring exchange, first kiss and any unique ceremony traditions.
And here's something your photographer will LOVE about Great Officiants: Your Officiant will ALWAYS step out of the way for that magical first kiss!
That means your photographer can capture a beautiful, unobstructed photo of your first kiss as a married couple, without your Officiant's face right between the two of you!
💍 Who Holds the Wedding Rings During the Ceremony?
Traditionally, the Best Man, Maid or Matron of Honor, or another trusted member of your wedding party holds the wedding rings.
Some couples have a ring bearer, while others prefer to keep the rings with a family member or their wedding planner.
Your Great Officiant will coordinate the ring exchange during the ceremony so everyone knows when the rings are needed.
We recommend choosing one responsible person to keep track of the rings until the ceremony begins.
💍 What Should I Do With My Engagement Ring During the Wedding Ceremony?
Here's a little wedding-day advice from your friends at Great Officiants!
We recommend keeping your engagement ring on the same ring finger where it has been since the proposal.
Please don't move it to your other hand before the ceremony! Your fingers aren't necessarily the same size, and your engagement ring might fit perfectly on one hand but get stuck on the other.
And trust us, the last thing you want on your wedding day is to be struggling to remove a ring!
During the Wedding Ceremony, we recommend exchanging ONLY the two wedding bands.
Leave your engagement ring exactly where it is. When it's time for the ring exchange, your partner can simply slide your wedding band onto the same finger, right next to your engagement ring.
Yes, that means your wedding band will temporarily be on the outside of your engagement ring. AND THAT'S PERFECTLY FINE!
Traditionally, the wedding band is worn closest to the heart, with the engagement ring on the outside. But there's no reason to worry about that during your ceremony.
After the wedding, when you're relaxing and celebrating, you can remove both rings and put them back on in your preferred order, with the wedding band closest to your heart.
💖 Can We Make Last-Minute Changes to Our Wedding Ceremony?
Sometimes a couple decides at the last minute to add a reading, change a vow or include a special family member.
If you need to make a change, please let your Great Officiant know as early as possible.
Small adjustments may be possible, depending on the ceremony and the time available.
More substantial changes, such as rewriting a personalized ceremony or adding complicated traditions, may require additional preparation and may not be possible on the wedding day.
🎉 What Happens Immediately After We Say "I Do"?
Once you've exchanged your vows, rings and promises, your Great Officiant will officially pronounce you married!
Then comes that unforgettable first kiss, the introduction of the newly married couple and your joyful walk back down the aisle!
Since we generally handle Marriage License signatures before the ceremony, you can move right into your celebration, photographs and time with your guests.
Your Great Officiant will make sure the required Marriage License information is completed and take care of the next steps for returning it for recording.
📬 Who Files Our Marriage License After the Wedding?
After your Wedding Ceremony, your Great Officiant is responsible for completing and returning your Marriage License to the appropriate County Clerk or Recorder for registration.
In California, the completed Marriage License must be returned to the county that issued it, generally within 10 days after the ceremony.
You do not need to file the Marriage License yourself when your Great Officiant is handling the ceremony.
Once the county records your marriage, you can request certified copies of your Marriage Certificate from the issuing county.
Certified copies are separate from the ceremony service and are not automatically provided by Great Officiants.
