Choosing Your Wedding Officiant

Questions to Ask Your Wedding Officiant Before You Book

Find the Right Person for Your “I Do.”

Your officiant helps set the tone for one of the most meaningful moments of your wedding. You deserve someone who understands your relationship, respects your wishes, and knows how to bring your ceremony to life.

These questions will help you talk through ceremony style, personalization, inclusivity, and practical details. Below, you will find how Great Officiants approaches each topic.

Click or tap a question to reveal the answer. No pop quiz at the end. You already have enough wedding homework.

Your Ceremony, Your Style

Can you customize our wedding ceremony?

Yes. We work with you to reflect your values, beliefs, personalities, and preferred tone. Your ceremony can be romantic, funny, traditional, spiritual, non-religious, themed, or a thoughtful blend.

The amount of custom writing and planning depends on your selected package. Tell us whether you want to personalize a ceremony style you like or include a more detailed telling of your relationship story.

Our relationship questionnaire helps your officiant learn the moments and details that make your story yours. Discuss the appropriate package or upgrade with your officiant.

Explore how to design your ceremony .

Do you have sample ceremonies, vows, and readings?

Yes. Our ceremony samples give you a starting point for exploring wording and styles. You can also browse our ceremony add-ins for meaningful rituals and special touches.

You do not need to arrive with a finished script. Show your officiant what you like, explain what does not feel like you, and build from there.

Can we choose special readings, rituals, or music?

Yes. Share the readings, music, cultural traditions, and rituals you would like to include. Your officiant can help you decide where they fit and how to introduce them.

Coordinate music playback with your DJ, musicians, or the person providing sound. Discuss any religious or venue requirements in advance so the plan works for your setting.

A favorite poem, a family blessing, or a song with a story behind it can make the moment feel more personal.

Will you give a sermon during the ceremony?

Your ceremony should reflect the approach you discussed with your officiant. We do not want you surprised by an unwanted sermon or religious message.

If you want a secular ceremony, tell us. If you want scripture, prayer, blessings, or a faith-centered reflection, we can help you connect with an appropriate officiant.

Agree on the religious content and tone before the wedding. The focus should remain on your commitment and the meaning of the occasion.

Do you require premarital counseling?

Great Officiants does not require premarital counseling as a company-wide booking condition. Our ceremony planning conversations focus on your wedding and how you want it to feel.

If you are requesting a particular religious service, ask your chosen clergy about any preparation requirements. Ceremony planning and relationship counseling are different services.

Finding an Officiant Who Understands You

Can we choose which Great Officiant performs our wedding?

Yes, subject to availability. Explore our officiant team and tell us who interests you. We can also help you narrow the options based on your location, ceremony style, faith preferences, and language needs.

A conversation with your prospective officiant helps you decide whether their personality and approach feel right before moving forward with booking.

Are you experienced and involved in the wedding industry?

Great Officiants began in 2003, when Alan Katz officiated his best friend’s wedding. It grew into a team offering different personalities, backgrounds, and ceremony specialties.

Alan also works as a professional speaker, sharing his experience with wedding professionals. You can explore our company story , couple testimonials , and television appearances to get to know us.

Ask your individual officiant about weddings similar to yours. Experience matters, and so does feeling comfortable with the person standing beside you.

Will you marry us if we have different faiths or have been divorced?

Yes, we welcome interfaith couples and couples who have previously been married. We can help you explore a ceremony that respects your beliefs and your shared future.

Let us know whether you want to blend traditions, acknowledge both backgrounds, or keep the ceremony entirely non-religious.

If recognition by a particular religious institution matters to you, discuss that separately with its clergy. A personalized ceremony and institutional religious recognition are not necessarily the same thing.

Do you welcome and affirm LGBTQIA+ couples?

Absolutely. Equality, inclusion, and respect are core values at Great Officiants. We proudly celebrate LGBTQIA+ couples and the many ways people build loving relationships.

Your names, pronouns, chosen family, and personal boundaries matter. We work with you to make the ceremony language and traditions feel affirming and authentic.

You deserve to feel celebrated throughout the process. Learn about our LGBTQIA+ wedding ceremonies .

Can another officiant, clergy member, or loved one participate?

Yes, we welcome discussing shared participation. Another officiant or clergy member may help lead parts of the ceremony, while a friend or family member might offer a reading, blessing, or personal tribute.

Arrange this before the wedding so everyone understands their role, the ceremony order, microphone handoffs, and paperwork responsibilities. Co-officiating arrangements may involve additional fees or requirements.

Your favorite people can help create the moment without having to manage the entire ceremony.

Can we have a bilingual ceremony?

Yes, depending on the language and officiant’s availability. We can help you explore a fully bilingual ceremony or selected portions in another language.

Tell us which languages your families and guests speak, and whether you prefer translations, alternating sections, or bilingual key moments. Confirm any additional fee when choosing your package.

Planning and Wedding-Day Details

What happens if our officiant becomes ill or has an emergency?

Having a team gives Great Officiants other professionals to contact if an unexpected emergency affects your booked officiant.

Our office would work to arrange an available replacement and communicate the next steps. Availability, location, timing, language, and ceremony requirements can affect the options.

Ask about the backup process before booking and keep our office contact information with your wedding-day details.

Do you issue marriage licenses?

Great Officiants offers confidential marriage license services for eligible couples marrying in California. Our team can explain the application, required documents, and appointment arrangements.

Not every officiant on our team issues licenses. License issuance must be arranged with an authorized member of our marriage license service team. Do not assume it is automatically included with your ceremony.

Will you attend or lead our rehearsal?

Rehearsal participation can be arranged, subject to availability and an additional fee. Ask early so your officiant can check the date, time, and location.

A rehearsal can cover the processional, standing positions, readings, ring handoff, and recessional. Let us know whether a coordinator will be present and who will lead each part.

How long will our ceremony last?

Many wedding timelines reserve about 30 minutes from walking in to walking out. Your exact timing depends on the processional, readings, vows, rituals, and ceremony style.

Tell your officiant about your timeline before finalizing the ceremony. Religious services or ceremonies with several traditions may need a different schedule.

Meaningful does not have to mean lengthy. We want your guests remembering your vows, not wondering when dinner starts.

When will our officiant arrive?

Confirm the arrival time directly with your chosen officiant. The plan should allow time to check in, review ceremony details, coordinate with your wedding team, and handle the planned paperwork.

Alan generally plans to arrive 30 to 60 minutes before the ceremony. Other officiants and service arrangements may have different schedules.

Share parking instructions, access restrictions, and your coordinator’s contact information before the wedding.

Should we invite our officiant and their spouse to the reception?

That is a kind invitation, but there is no expectation that you host your officiant or a guest. Your officiant may have another ceremony or commitment afterward.

If you would like them to stay, ask directly before finalizing your guest count. Do not reserve seats or meals unless they have accepted.

Are there restrictions on our wedding attire?

Great Officiants does not impose a company-wide wedding dress code. Formalwear, cultural clothing, beach attire, and themed outfits can all be part of your celebration.

Tell your officiant about the style and setting, and discuss what you would like them to wear. Specific costumes or specialty attire should be arranged in advance.

Your venue or a particular religious service may have separate requirements.

Is flash photography allowed during the ceremony?

We welcome your photographer capturing the ceremony. Discuss flash, positioning, and movement with your photographer, officiant, and venue before the wedding.

Venue or religious-service rules may apply. You can also request an unplugged ceremony so guests enjoy the moment while your professional photographer handles the pictures.

Your officiant will step aside for the kiss photo. That moment belongs to the two of you!

Will you use a microphone for our ceremony and wedding video?

Yes, we will coordinate with your sound and video professionals. Let your officiant know whether they will use a handheld microphone, wear a lapel microphone, or carry a small recording device.

A microphone used for the video recording does not necessarily amplify sound for guests. Confirm both needs with your DJ or audio provider and allow time for a sound check.

Some officiants offer a small sound-system option for intimate ceremonies. Ask about suitability, availability, and the fee rather than assuming sound equipment is included.

What should we confirm about pricing before booking?

Ask for the total for your selected officiant, ceremony package, location, and requested services. Confirm what is included and what costs extra.

Discuss travel, rehearsal attendance, bilingual services, specialty costumes, sound equipment, and marriage license services if relevant. Also review payment timing, cancellation terms, and any late-start charges.
